2017 Michigan International Speedway results from August 13, 2017 featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Today, NASCAR returns to Michigan. The 2 mile oval hosts the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. 60 laps in stage 1 and 2, 80 laps in the final stage.

Brad Keselowski starts on the pole. The rest of the Ford’s trail in the rows directly behind. Where are the Toyota’s? Keselowski thinks their sandbagging. Maybe we’ll find out.

Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne will start at the tail. They’ll make things exciting. Johnson had to do the same thing back in June.

Round 1

Green flag, Brad Keselowski gets the jump. He’s doesn’t need clearance to the bottom, the #2 remains in the middle. There’s more banking in the middle. Kevin Harvick pulls even with Joey Logano in turn 1. Harvick splits the Penske machines.

Keselowski leads by 10 car lengths down the back straight.

Lap 5, Kahne up to 31st. Teammate, Johnson runs 32nd.

Lap 15, Kevin Harvick has been reeling in Keselowski. As soon as Brad caught traffic, Harvick closed the gap. Clean air has been removed from the leader. Harvick trails by .2 seconds. Harvick is there, but his run has stalled, aero push.

Clint Bowyer radio, “Not great. Loose, all the way through the corner.”

23 to go in stage 1, Jamie McMurray is thinking that he has a vibration. He isn’t sure. But he’s a bubble driver and they head 117 mph into turn 1. A loose wheel would be a problem that might end’s his championship battle. He picks the safe route.

19 to go, Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano head to pit road in tandem. Harvick, Truex Jr is in with 18 to. 17 to go, race leader Brad Keselowski is in. Erik Jones takes over the lead. Harvick short pitted by 1 lap, but that plan didn’t work.

15 to go, Erik Jones hits pit road from the lead. Kyle Busch follows. Brad Keselowski is back to the lead. Kevin Harvick is just behind.

Joey Logano thinks he has a loose wheel. The crew is confident they got them tight, the team has reviewed helmet cam footage from the tire changers. They tell him to remain on track.

3 to go, Keselowsi leads. Martin Truex Jr runs 4th, that’s +9 from the start. Kahne is 21st, Johnson is 23rd, from the tail of the field.

Stage 2

Brad Keselowski, “The biggest challenge has been debris.” He got a large piece stuck on the grill in the first stage.

Green flag, Suarez and Keselowski even at the line. Suarez inches in front he drives up the banking to avoid a side draft. Keselowksi chases him up the hill, he bounces air off his nose and to the spoiler of Suarez then dives to the bottom. Keselowksi clears him at the exit of turn 2.

Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson nearly wrecked. Larson drove it in to turn 3, taking the position. He lost the front end as he caught Kahne and had to lift. Hamlin had a run behind him, he lifted as well, but the accordion nearly got him. A light bump to Larson, a wiggle and they all continue.

21 to go, Jimmie Johnson +23 positions. He runs 15th. Kahne runs 17th.

14 to go, Johnson and Truex start the pit cycle. Truex thought he had a loose wheel, it wasn’t. But the tire itself was missing a big chunk of rubber.

10 to go, Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski are on pit road. Keselowski returns to the track behind Harvick. Short pitting allowed Harvick to run faster for 3 straight laps, that was the difference. Kyle Busch is handed the lead. Matt Kenseth has been handed a speeding penalty.

Kyle Busch hits the pits and hands the lead to Martin Truex Jr. Truex was the first on pit road. That’s put him in the lead.

8 to go, Keselowski gets a run on Kevin Harvick out of turn 2. He pulls along side down the back. Brad takes the position. Fast car plus 3 laps newer tires. Suarez is dropping like a rock on old tires.

Keselowski is running down Truex! He’s made up a full second in 3 laps. He’s going to run out of time. Truex wins stage 2.

Stage 2 Results: 1. Martin Truex Jr; 2. Brad Keselowski; 3. Kevin Harvick; 4. Erik Jones; 5. Daniel Suarez; 6. Ryan Blaney; 7. Jamie McMurray; 8. Kyle Larson; 9. Kyle Busch; 10. Denny Hamlin;

Stage 3

Green flag, Martin Truex Jr gets the jump. He runs away up the hill under the flag stand. Keselowski chases him, side draft and he dives to the bottom. The run even in 1-2. Keselowski has a nose in front off turn 2.

Martin Treux Jr carries the highside momentum to the outside down the back. Truex leads into turn 3. Keselowksi dives to the bottom. He wiggles and drifts up the track. Truex lifts to avoid a possible crash. Keselowski takes the lead out of turn 4.

Keselowski leads into turn 1 but the battle for the lead isn’t done. Truex has a push from Harvick and Jones down the front straight. He’s got a run on him. Truex drives right to his rear bumper. Close. No contact but Keselowski chases it up the banking. Truex back to the lead!

Lap 131, Ryan Blaney is on pit road. He made contact with Kevin Harvick at the line. Fender damage resulted in a tire rub.

Lap 134, Erik Jones has a run on Keselowski. He pulls to the inside in turn 1, drifts up in front and takes away the position.

Trouble! Kasey Kahne dove it to the bottom in turn 1. He drove under Saurez, he tried to slide up in front on the exit. He misjudged, by inches. He wasn’t clear, instead he slide across the nose of Suarez which pointed him head on at the wall. Huge impact. He made an abrupt stop at the impact to the wall. Suarez, directly behind then pilled into his rear bumper. Both cars destroyed but both drivers are alright.

Green flag, Truex gets the jump, clear by 3 car lengths into turn 1. Joey Logano gets loose in turn 3. He chases it up the hill as the field slides by on the inside, 4 wide.

Clint Bowyer has a flat right front. He’s coasting to the pits. If the tire breaks apart it will tear off the fender and end his day completely. 50 mph for a 1/2 lap back to the pits. Still green.

lap 156, Joey Logano is on pit road, he starts the final cycle. Lap 161, Martin Truex Jr pits from the lead. He hands the lead to Keselowski. Lap 163, Keselowski is in, he hands it to Hamlin. The #11 leads Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson.

22 laps to go, Hamlin pits from the lead. New leader, Kyle Busch.

15 to go, Joey Logano has a flat right front tire. He’s on pit road. Caution for debris. There is debris from Logano’s torn tire but it’s well off the racing groove on the back straight.

Trevor Bayne takes 2 tires, he leads them off pit road. 4 cars stayed out including Martin True Jr, Erik Jones, Chase Elliott and Matt Kenseth.

Green flag, 9 laps to go. Truex gets the jump on Jones. He drops from the top to the bottom. He clears him before the entry to turn 1.

5 to go, caution. Michael McDowell is around down the back straight. Paul Menard got loose on the inside. He chased it up the banking, McDowell was there. It sent McDowell around and he’s now coasting back to the pits with multiple flat tires. Minor damage.

Several cars hit pit road. Kyle Larson pitted on the last restart. Now, he’s going to start from 4th. He’s going to be the guy to watch on this restart. Red flag. Oil on track and NASCAR will head into overtime. That only makes things more intense! Boss man, Chip Ganassi, radios to Kyle Larson, “3 wide in turn 1?”

G-W-C, Kyle Larson gives Truex a push! Truex drifts high, Larson remains in the middle. He splits the leaders with a push from Trevor Bayne. At the same time, Matt Kenseth has made it 3 wide for the lead on the inside! Erik Jones got swamped.

Kyle Larson to the inside in turn 1. The #42 chops across the nose of Matt Kenseth, Larson takes the lead at the middle of turn 1! Larson has clear track. Kyle Larson wins at Michigan International Speedway! It’s his 3rd win in a row at Michigan.
