Kyle Larson calls it the most embarrassing moment in his racing career

On Friday night, Golden Isles Speedway hosted night two of the 2023 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series season. The 4/10-mile of Golden Isles Speedway put on a thriller of a show.

Kyle Larson, Ricky Thornton Jr and Brandon Overton put on a show. The three drivers sliced through lap traffic in the battle for the win.

With just 4 laps to go, Overton jumped the cushion. That handed 2nd to Kyle Larson.

With 3 to go, Larson took his turn on the cushion. As Ricky Thornton Jr tip toed around the bottom lane, Larson was on the gas. He pulled even with Thornton Jr and Larson finally cleared him into turn two with just two laps to go.

After taking the checkered flag, Larson drove to the scales. He returned to the track, en route to victory lane.

Larson stepped on the gas down the backstretch with the rear end kicked out. When he got to turn three, he lost the car. He lopped it, a full 360.

The car went nose first into the outside wall. The nose was heavily damaged.

Larson climbed from the car in turn three with both hands in the air. A wrecker pulled up to the scene and began hooking up to the car.

They then dropped the hook, Larson re-fired the car and he drove to victory lane. The hood sat on the roof as he took off and it fell off the car in transport.

Larson said, “Every late model race I’ve ran this year has been exciting.”

Friday night at Golden Isles is the only race Larson plans to attend this week after missing Thursday night. His NASCAR team owner, Rick Hendrick has a 50th anniversary party scheduled for Saturday.

“I’m an idiot,” Kyle Larson said from victory lane.

“I was way too excited obviously. I feel really bad that I tore up a perfectly good race car.”

“We had a team lunch thing with the No. 5 team this week. There was a ton of fun questions and stuff. One of them, Cliff was like, ‘What’s the most embarrassing moment you ever had?’ “

“Well, I had one before. At Williams Grove, I wrecked under caution. I think this one takes the cake.”

Larson added, “That was very embarrassing. I don’t even know what to say. But, sorry to Kevin Rumley.”

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series returns to Golden Isles Speedway on Saturday night. Drivers will battle for a $25,000 victory as the Georgia portion of Speedweeks comes to a close.
