NASCAR president Phelps on adding horsepower; 2025 TV deal

NASCAR president Steve Phelps reluctant to add horsepower

The NASCAR business model could change drastically for 2025. A new tv deal is set to be announced and teams have been in talks with NASCAR for several years as their looking for a larger piece of the tv revenue.

NASCAR is currently working on a fix for their short track package. It’s an issue they’ve been working on since the launch of the Next Gen car in 2022.

At the end of the 2023 season, NASCAR appeared to be open to the idea of adding horsepower. However, now the President of the sport has curbed hopes that idea is put in play.

The NASCAR President spoke to the media on Tuesday regarding a wide range of topics…

TV Deal

A tv deal will be in play for 2025. Contracts with box FOX and NBC will expire following the 2024 season.

Phelps noted that both NBC and FOX are expected to return. The new deal is expected to be announced soon.

Additionally, Phelps hinted that a third tv partner would join the schedule. NASCAR has noted they were attempting to sell a 10-race deal to a new streaming partner.

Horsepower

“I don’t think the answer is more horsepower because more horsepower is expensive,” Phelps said.

“If you ask a driver what’s going to solve it, they’re always going to say ‘Give me more horsepower.’ It’s a thing.”

“I’m not a driver, but I’ve listened to enough drivers and that’s their solution. So the question is is that really what it is? I don’t know.”

“I think there’s some gearing things that we’re looking at as well. Some shifting things.”
