The 2024 Indianapolis 500 sets a race purse record
On Sunday, Indycar Series drivers took the green flag at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The famed Indy 500 ended with a thrilling finish.
Josef Newgarden took the lead from Pato O’Ward on turn three of the final lap. The pass via the outside lane has pad well.
He claimed a wiinning check for $4.288 million from a total purse of $18,456,000. The average payout through the entire field was $543,000.
Newgarden’s earnings included a $440,000 rollover bonus from BorgWarner. That comes from winning back-to-back Indy 500 wins. $20,000 is added to the pot each year but it’s only been claimed once prior when Helio Castroneves won the Indy 500 in 2001 and 2002.
2nd place finisher Pato O’Ward was in the lead until the final two corners. However, his 2nd place run still brought in a check for $1,050,500.
Kyle Larson has been crowned with the ‘Rookie of the Race’ award. That award comes with a $50,000 bonus, bringing his total race earnings to $178,000.
“The Indianapolis 500 is the greatest race in the world, and this record-breaking purse is reflective of just how monumental competing in and winning at Indy is for these drivers,” Penske Entertainment President and CEO Mark Miles said. “Despite weather challenges, the Month of May featured packed grandstands and intense on-track action. Presenting this purse is the ideal end cap to an epic month.”
