Just ahead of the restart in stage two, the pace car made a hard left hand turn toward the pit lane. It was too late of a commitment.
Instead, the pace car driver slid into the sand barrels. Sand went flying across the pit lane.
Chase Elliott was set to restart on the front row. And, he had a front row seat to the show.
“He was not going to make it. That was a late decision,” Chase Elliott stated over the team radio.
No. 9 Crew chief Alan Gustafson stated, “I just let them know they’re on DVP. They’ve got six minutes. Can’t work on it under red.”
“Just turned too late. There was no way he could make it,” Jeff Burton stated from the NBC booth.
NASCAR was forced to display the red flag for pit road cleanup. It was a brief delay.
Update: the race has since concluded.
