Race Report

Green flag, Herta clears Malukas. Kyle Kirkwood and Christian Lungaard brake late and make it three wide for the lead into turn one! Lundgaard runs wide out of turn one, Herta crosses under him. Herta leads Lundgaard.

Lap 3, Kirkwood dives inside of Lundgaard. Kirkwood retakes 2nd.

Lap 10, Rinus VeeKay is on the pit lane with a mechanical failure.

Lap 12, Kirkwood hits the pit lane. He’ll switch from soft to hard tires.

Lap 14, Felix Rosenqvist spins and backs it into the tire wall. The caution is out. McLaughlin, Rasmussen and others have yet to pit.

Green, Rasmussen leads Rahal and Ericsson. McLaughlin gets into the back of Siegel and Siegel is around, no caution.

Lap 19, Davlin DeFrancesco has lost a wheel, caution.

Green, Rasmussen stays out and he leads Rahal into turn one.

Lap 24, Multiple cars have still yet to pit. Herta dives inside of Power in the battle for 13th. They bang wheels but Power holds the position.

Lap 39

Lap 39, Dixon is the last car to pit. Kyle Kirkwood cycles to the race lead and he leads Power by 1.5 seconds.

Lap 44, Kirkwood has lost a piece of carbon fiber of his car. Power clips it as it flies through the air. Kirkwood still leads.

Lap 48, Rasmussen brushes the wall on cold tires. No caution as he keeps it rolling.

Lap 50, Kyle Kirkwood heads for the pit lane. The second pit cycle is underway.

Lap 57, Kirkwood cycles back to the race lead. Power trails by 1.3 seconds.

Lap 67

Lap 67, Callum Ilott is hard into the wall as he loses a wheel exiting the pit lane. The caution is out.

Kirkwood leads most of the field to the pit lane. Ferrucci, Simpson and Armstrong all stay out as they pitted just ahead of the caution. All cars can now make it to the end of the race.

Green with 28 to go, Herta is in the tire barrier with a push from David Malukas! The caution is back out.

Penalty: Malukas will serve a drive-through penalty and fall to the rear of the field.

Green, Ferrucci leads Simpson.

23 to go, Kirkwood works alongside Simpson for 2nd. Kirkwood picks up wing damage as he pulled out of line and clipped Simpson’s rear tire.

22 to go, Kirkwood has a run on Ferrucci out of the final corner. Kirkwood completes the pass before turn one. Kirkwood takes over the lead.

16 to go, Louis Foster loses something in the front suspension. He drives into the back of Felix Rosenqvist and they’re both in the tire barrier. The red flag is out as Rosenqvist is heading to the medical team on a stretcher after stating he has leg pain.

Green, Kirkwood is clear by two car lengths over Power into turn one.

10 to go, Ferrucci has a run on Power into turn one. Ferrucci to 2nd! Herta dives inside of Power into turn 8, Herta to 3rd.

5 to go, Kirkwood leads Ferrucci and Herta by 3 seconds.

4 to go, Herta dives inside of Ferrucci for 2nd. He can’t pull far enough inside. They rub wheels, Ferrucci holds 2nd.

Kyle Kirkwood wins the Detroit Grand Prix!
