Appeals panel issues ruling on the Ryan Preece penalty

NASCAR issued a big fine and docked points from Ryan Preece after crashing Ty Gibbs

Earlier this month at Texas Motor Speedway, there was an incident between Ryan Preece and Ty Gibbs. The end result was a steep penalty from NASCAR for intentionally wrecking.

Ty Gibbs made a late dive to the inside of Preece. Preece was very vocal over the radio noting, “Alright, when I get to the 54, I’m done with him. ****ing idiot.”

Confirmed, as laps later, Preece got to the bumper of Gibbs, sending him into the outside wall. Gibbs was done for the day.

NASCAR issued a steep penalty to Preece after the incident. The driver was fined $50,000 and he was docked 25 points.

RFK Racing elected to appeal the penalty to the No. 60 machine. Today, that appeal case was heard.

Of the three person panel, two of the three voted for keeping the penalty in tact.

Upon hearing the testimony, the decisions of the National Motorsports Appeals Panel are:

1. That the Appellant violated the Rule(s) set forth in the Penalty Notice.

2. That the Panel affirms and upholds the original Penalty assessed by NASCAR. In reaching the above decision, the panel provided the following explanation: “Although not a unanimous decision, NASCAR and RFK Racing presented competing interpretations of common data. Neither side clearly proved their point, but Mr. Preece’s comments showed that he chose to not cut his competitor any breaks.”

“RFK Racing is extremely disappointed in today’s ruling by the National Motorsports Appeals Panel. We stand by Ryan Preece and believe our argument was fair, sound and without question.”

“We appreciate the forum provided by NASCAR to both provide detailed evidence and defend our stance through thoughtful data and digital evidence.”

The team concluded, “Let’s get back to racing – See you in Nashville.”
