Over 60 years later, NASCAR returned. The Next Gen car made an appearance at the track on Thursday December 9th in a single car test session.
The Next Gen car will make it’s official debut in 2022. The new NASCAR chassis is a spec design. Cost savings and better aero racing are expected with the new car.
Wheels on the Next Gen are much wider than the previous build. That opens the door for much softer tires, tires that wear. Goodyear has hosted many tests at various tracks with multiple tire compounds on hand.
Friesen isn’t a regular competitor at the NASCAR Cup Series level. He runs full time in the NASCAR Truck Series. However, he also has loads of dirt racing experience as he ran a big-block modified and super late model frequently in 2021.
NASCAR went dirt racing for the first time in the modern era last year. Friesen was a part of that race. Of note, ahead of the Next Gen test, Friesen was calling for a harder tire, a unique dirt solution. He explained in detail via the link below.
Stewart Friesen comments on the Next Gen dirt test
“Pretty cool day today. Got to test the next gen car at Lancaster SC while some of the best guys in the industry took notes. Thanks to the guys and gals RCR and NASCAR,” Stewart Friesen tweeted.
He added, “Damn awesome to spend some time close to that number 3.”
The test at Lancaster was to select a tire for the Bristol Dirt race. It was rumored that the old car would be used on the dirt track, NASCAR put that rumor to rest months ago.
There’s many groups tests of the Next Gen car on the horizon. Teams will visit Charlotte Motor Speedway, Daytona International Speedway and Phoenix Raceway before the 2022 season begins. Additional tests are possible.
