Sting Ray Robb suffered a violent crash on the final lap of the Indycar race at Iowa Speedway
Update: The Indycar driver has been airlifted to a local hospital for precautionary measures
On Sunday, Iowa Speedway hosted the second race of a double-header INDYCAR race weekend. It ended with a dramatic crash.

On the final lap, Alexander Rossi slowed off turn two. It appeared that he was out of fuel or running low on fuel.
Sting Ray Robb drove over his left rear and was sent skyward. Air got under the car, launching it high into the air.
With all four wheels off the ground, Robb came back to earth on the left rear wheel. The car then barrel rolled down the backstretch.
Stong Ray Robb slid most of the backstretch, upside down. He came to a rest, still upside down in turn three.
The safety team was quick to the scene. They flipped the car onto it’s mangled wheels. A fire then broke out but it was quickly extinguished.
He climbed from the car and was placed on a stretcher. While being lifted into the ambulance, Robb held two thumbs up.
The driver has since been airlifted to a local hospital.
Scott McLaughlin stated, “Well, first, I wanna hope that Sting Ray is okay. That was a hell of a crash.”
Ed Carpenter, Kyle Kirkwood and Alexander Rossi all slid toward the inside wall.

Medical Update
Shortly after the crash, the medical team has provided an update:
“Sting Ray’s doing well. He’s awake, he’s alert and in good condition,” Indycar medical lead Julia Vaizer stated.
“We’re going to send him to the hospital for precautionary measures to get some imaging. He’s going to go by air, just because of the location.”
“But, he’s in good spirits and he says hello to everyone.”
Ed Carpenter comments
“I’m okay. I’m just angry,” Carpenter told NBC after exiting the care center.
“I knew Alex was off pace up ahead. My spotter told me a couple laps before. It looks like Sting Ray just misjudged the closing right, somehow. Even though it was clear Alex was slow.”
“Then, I spun just trying to get down. I didn’t think it was going to be that bad. I kinda slid into Alex, then I think Kirkwood came from behind and launched me right over the top of Alex.”
“Two days in a row, two accidents that I was really just a victim of.”
Update: Sting Ray Robb released
AJ Foyt Racing posted the following update:
“After further assessment at Mercy One Des Moines Medical Center, Sting Ray has been released.”
“Sting Ray’s family and AJ Foyt Racing would like to extend our gratitude to the AMR Safety team for their quick response, to INDYCAR medical staff for their thorough care and INDYCAR for the high safety standards of our race cars that allowed Sting Ray to walk away from a horrific accident today.”
